James Heavey Awarded Professional Degree

Feb 14, 2012

James Heavey - Certified in Long Term CareJames D. Heavey of Lighthouse Financial Group has been awarded a professional degree in the field of long-term care, Certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC). The program is independent of the insurance industry and focuses on providing financial service professionals the tools needed to meet their client’s long-term care needs.

“The field of long-term care is complex. It intersects with other professions such as financial planning, tax law, home care, government funding and elder law. My ability to serve the community depends upon understanding what resources, such as housing and services, clients will need as they age and how they will be paid for,” Mr. Heavey explained.

"I have had far too many families ask for my advice on what they can do after a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or some other chronic illness. The fact is there is little that can be done at this point and now these families are faced with years of physical stress and heartache. This is compounded by the reality that paying for care can easily devastate their family’s financial viability,” Mr. Heavey stated.

“It is my responsibility to help people understand the emotional, physical and financial consequences associated with providing or paying for care over an extended period of time. It is essential they have this information so they can take action to protect those they love while they have options. I am committed to helping my clients create an appropriate plan to meet their specific needs”, said Heavey.

Mr. James Heavey can be reached at (207) 975-5157 or at jheavey@forestersequity.com.

F.A. Peabody's Nikki Shields Named Featured Advisor

Feb 01, 2012

Nikki Shields - Worksite Benefits SpecialistWorking as F.A. Peabody’s Worksite Benefits Specialist is a natural fit for Nikki Shields.  Nikki is a true believer in voluntary benefits because she has seen them put to work.

“To me they make sense [voluntary benefits].  I have seen these plans help people who are going through the trials of cancer and the hard times of disability.  The accident plan has even worked for me by covering emergency room costs for my two teenage boys.  I feel everyone should have some sort of coverage to help fill the gaps of high deductibles because after all, anyone can have an accident.”

Born and raised in Presque Isle, Maine, Nikki is a graduate of Presque Isle High School and attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  Her insurance career began in 1993 as a Claims Specialist with Maine Mutual Group.  She then moved on to work as a Support Specialist and Broker Assistant for the Dunlap Corporation in Bangor, Maine.  In 2002, she firmly planted her roots back in Presque Isle and began working with F.A. Peabody to build her book of business in Group Health, Life, Medicare Supplement and Disability Insurance.  Covering a 150-mile territory in northern Maine (close to where the caribou roam), Nikki now specializes in providing Voluntary Benefits from Washington National.

So why is Nikki our featured agent?  Nikki led the entire country in Net Annualized Premium (NAP) for a Fortune 500 Company – Washington National - for the month of December 2011.  But, here’s the kicker.  Nikki was not even appointed with Washington National until September 29, 2011.  She wrote her first case mid-late October and then proceeded to write over 100K of NAP before the end of the year.  Thus, Nikki qualified herself and her husband, Scott, for a trip of a lifetime to Hawaii.  Oh, along the way she also managed to qualify for a brand new 40” LCD flat screen TV as well.  Congratulations, Nikki, you rock.

At Combined Benefits United, we are proud to be associated with F.A. Peabody and professionals like Nikki Shields.  We value the savvy leadership and direction of Max Lynds - Vice President of Life and Benefits - and hold in high regard his efforts to expand F.A. Peabody’s voluntary benefits offerings. When asked about F.A. Peabody, Nikki commented, “We work as a team and are very supportive of each other.  I am fortunate to be with F.A. Peabody and appreciate the opportunities and continuing education they have provided”.

Acting as a cheerleader in the background, CBU is excited to provide the training and systems that Nikki needs to succeed.  Nikki attributes her success to the value and superiority of the Washington National product line and to Brian Heath – CBU’s Worksite Division Manager – for “acting as an unbelievable mentor and resource”.

Nikki is a true advocate of the insurance industry.  She is a Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) Graduate, past Secretary and President of the Aroostook County National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), and a 2011 recipient of the Arthur and Helen Charles Award – a symbol of her involvement and dedication to the insurance industry.  Nikki and Scott have been married for 18 years, and they are proud of their two sons Bradley (16) and Nicolas (14).  When taking a break from insurance, Nikki loves spending time with her family, attending the boys’ sporting events, traveling, and of course shopping.

Once again, congratulations Nikki on winning Washington National’s Hawaii incentive trip.  All we have to say now is “look out 2012 ‘cause Nikki has her sights set on CURAÇAO”!

Young Adults and the Affordable Care Act

Jan 31, 2012

Affordable Care Act - Combined Benefits UnitedThe Affordable Care Act, recently passed under the Obama Administration, is a law that aims to better our health care structure by increasing national coverage and by offering more protection to those who are already insured. Parts of the Affordable Care Act have already taken effect, but others will be implemented later on.

Possibly the greatest impact that the act has had is on young adults. This year, it prohibited insurance companies from denying coverage to individuals under 19 based on pre-existing conditions. It also enabled young adults to stay on their parents’ health care plan until age 26 unless eligible for employer coverage. Beginning in 2014, that coverage will apply to the same age group even if they have an offer of coverage through their own employer.

The act offers young adults health insurance choices that compliment voluntary benefits.  Up to 2.4 million young adults could gain coverage through the provision of this new law – exciting news for the nation’s most uninsured demographic.

Health Care Innovations

Jan 17, 2012

Health Care Innovations - Combined Benefits UnitedWe live in a technical age that has numerous benefits for people all over the world. Probably the most significant impact of technological advances is the one they have upon our health care. Look back even to just a few decades ago and you’ll be amazed at how far the medical field has come.

There have been new discoveries in tools as well as diseases, how they’re caused, and how to treat them. Over the past few years, innovations like electronic health records and the use of mobile computing devices in hospitals have begun to improve medical care delivery. Consumer health information websites and online disease support groups have made millions of people advocates for their own health care. Such resources teach people more about how to become – and stay – healthy. The less you get sick or have health-related problems, the less money you’ll spend on getting treatment.

New products (like facilitated home blood-sugar level testing devices for diabetics) can cut health care costs by allowing people to monitor their own health and make sound choices to prevent ending up in the doctor’s office. As Frank Moss, former director of the M.I.T. media lab, asserts, “Many situations would still call for professional medical attention, of course, but in most cases you wouldn’t need to make a costly trip to the doctor’s office.”

With health product innovations, savings in health care costs could amount to billions or even trillions of dollars a year. There seems to be a greater demand than ever for new technology in the health realm. Private sector money is beginning to flow and optimistic entrepreneurs are serving as patrons for medical research.

Now seems to be an ideal time to gain access to this progress to be able to benefit from all that the medical field has to offer. If you’re uninsured, that could be difficult. As qualified brokers, the professionals at CBU can present you with affordable options that fit your income and your lifestyle. Contact us today with questions or to set up a free consultation.

Association between Lack of Health Insurance and Mortality

Jan 13, 2012

Health Insurance - Combined Benefits UnitedWe all know that seeing a health care provider regularly can improve and maintain your health. Reasons for this include things like being able to detect conditions early, getting advice on how to exercise and eat healthily, and getting information on what medications would be best for you. But how much of a difference can regular health care make?

People without health insurance typically can’t afford regular health care and don’t get it unless they absolutely need it. Many people opt out on health insurance because they feel that they don’t and won’t need it. They might be young and healthy and not expecting to need medical attention in the foreseeable future, or maybe they think preventative health care isn’t worth paying for when they can make healthy choices on their own. But there are surprises that any person has a chance of encountering. Cancer or diabetes, for example, can both be genetic, and even someone who lives a healthy lifestyle could develop either or both of these diseases.

A JAMA® study done from 1971 to 1987 found that lacking health insurance has a strong “association with an increased risk of subsequent mortality.” At the end of the follow-up period in 1975, 9.6% of the insured subjects and 18.4% of the uninsured subjects had died. There is a statistically significant differencein mortality rates between the two groups. This means that having health insurance actually makes you more likely to live longer – so it is a worthwhile investment!

As a qualified broker in the insurance industry, Combined Benefits United can help you find affordable health insurance options that fit your income and your life style. Contact us for answers to your questions or for a free consultation.

A Lack of Insurance Can Negatively Affect a Child’s Academic Performance

Jan 05, 2012

Child struggling in schoolMost families that are uninsured or have at least one uninsured member choose not to purchase insurance because they feel that it is too expensive. Hundreds of studies have connected socioeconomic status with various outcomes in children’s physical, mental, and emotional health.

Initially, children that are uninsured have parents who are statistically more likely to be unemployed and/or have no more than a high school education. Thus, they probably live with financial hardships that make academic performance more difficult than it is for their insured counterparts. If they’re spending school hours with worries about money in the back of their minds, they probably won’t be retaining as much information as they could.

Other studies have demonstrated that uninsured parents delay seeking care for themselves and their uninsured children until the symptoms are more severe. These delays may result in unnecessary hospitalizations for preventable or readily treatable conditions. Children will then miss out school and educational opportunities. More importantly, children who don’t see a doctor regularly may have learning impairments that go undiagnosed. Such barriers to learning could cause a child to struggle greatly in school and maybe even develop a dislike of being there.

Health insurance can benefit you and your dependents physically, mentally, and emotionally – and there are affordable plans out there. As qualified insurance brokers, the professionals at CBU have the ability to find you the best plan to fit your income and lifestyle. Contact us today with questions or to set up a free insurance consultation.

Why LTC Insurance Could Be the Perfect Present

Dec 19, 2011

LTC Insurance - Combined Benefits UnitedThe point of a gift is to make someone you love happy, and to improve their life. As Denise Gott, Chairman of the Board of LTC Financial Partners, says, “What can do that better than financial protection ensuring one’s whole future?”

Getting long-term care insurance for yourself or partner can bring certainty to both of you. If one dies, the other is guaranteed financial security, giving them less to worry about in such a difficult time. Also, your assets and lifestyle will be protected for years.

For your parents, it will give them security in their golden years. Social security retirement income doesn’t always allow people to afford things like LTC insurance, and financial peace of mind is a wonderful gift to give.

If you buy long-term care insurance for your children, it will be rather cheap – “a fraction of what many people spend per year on coffee at Starbucks” (insurancenewsnet.com).  It will carry on for them for the rest of their lives, so that they won’t have to purchase it an increased price in their future.

Long-term care insurance is tax-deductible. You can use the money that you get back every year to buy your friends and family members gifts!

Combined Benefits United is a qualified broker in the insurance industry. Our insurance professionals can match you with a long-term care insurance plan that is just right for your income and lifestyle. Please feel free to contact us today for a free consultation.

World AIDS Day

Dec 01, 2011

World AIDS Day - Combined Benefits UnitedDecember 1st is World AIDS day, and there’s no better time than the present to stress the importance of AIDS awareness. The first case of AIDS in the US was reported in April of 1980, followed by an epidemic that brought unease to the nation. HIV/AIDS is a terrible virus to live with, because it incessantly weakens the immune system. We’ve come a long way since the first US AIDS case over 30 years ago, but awareness is still an important cause. World AIDS day is also a time to honor the victims of HIV/AIDS and to support their loved ones.

What is HIV/AIDS?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that can only affect humans. It’s a lot like other viruses, including those that cause the “flu” or the common cold, but with one difference: over time, your immune system can clear viruses out of your body. That isn’t the case with HIV. The human immune system can’t seem to get rid of it, and scientists are still trying to figure out why.

People should get tested for HIV even if they are convinced there’s no way they could have it. It is one of those sneaky viruses, because it can hide for long periods of time in the cells of your body. When it’s not in hiding, it attacks key cells of your immune system. Over time, the HIV virus can destroy so many of those cells that your body won’t be able to fight infections and diseases anymore.

How do you get it?

HIV is found in four specific human body fluids:  blood, semen, breast milk, and rectal/anal mucous. If any of those fluids enters your body, you can become infected with HIV.

Where can you get tested, and how?

An HIV test can be done through a blood test, or by having your urine or saliva tested. The tests are quick and easy (some can be done in 15-20 minutes), and always worth it.

You can ask your healthcare provider for an HIV test. Many medical clinics, substance abuse programs, community health centers, and hospitals offer them too. A great option is to go to a local family planning facility or STD clinic, either of which will often test for HIV (as well as other STDs/STIs) for free, or for a scaled price.

Health insurance and Voluntary Benefits can help!

Whether you need your HIV test covered by insurance, or you’ve been diagnosed with HIV and need to pay for treatment, health insurance and voluntary benefits could help  you. If you find out that you have HIV, there are treatments that can help prevent it from developing into AIDS. It is important to monitor HIV once it has been diagnosed, but it can become very expensive for those who are not insured.

Many young people put off buying insurance benefits because they feel that they are not at risk for many conditions that would render it necessary.  Feel free to call or email us for a free consultation regarding voluntary health benefits.

Most Single Parents Lack Life Insurance, Study Says

Nov 18, 2011

Life Insurance for Single Parents - Combined Benefits UnitedLife Insurance protects those who depend on your paycheck. If you die prematurely, it can provide ongoing income to your dependents until they are able to live comfortably without it. It can also provide emergency support for legal, medical, and funeral costs, should family savings not be sufficient to cover them. So it may seem that people like single parents would be the biggest customers of life insurance. But a 2011 study done by Genworth has shown that single parents – the group arguably most in need of life insurance – are among the highest uninsured people in the U.S.

The study, the Genworth Financial Life Jacket Survey, showed that many single parents – 69% of those with children living at home and 59% of those who don’t have children living at home – have no life insurance.

Life Insurance is a great way to make sure that your children and other family members will have more financial peace of mind in the event of your death. When you die, monetary benefits will be endowed to your children, or to other heirs that you establish. So for single parents this would be a great idea, especially for those who are solely supporting their children, with no help at all from the other parent.

“We find that many single parents are simply too busy – or even too scared – to properly evaluate their life insurance needs,” said Gregory Fairchild, executive director of the Tayloe Murphy Center at the Darden School of Business. “This is an understandable fear because the first level of safety – the other parent – isn’t there. The study revealed the severity of this situation, not just among single parents, but married ones, too. The insurance industry has an opportunity to better educate customers and give them the tools and resources to help protect themselves and their families.

We at CBU would be more than happy to help find you appropriate and affordable Life Insurance options, or even just to answer your questions about it. Call today for more information and/or to schedule a free consultation.

November is Long Term Care Insurance Awareness Month

Nov 03, 2011

Combined Benefits United - Long Term Care Insurance November brings colorful foliage and hints of winter in the air, but it also means the start of National Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance awareness month!

LTC insurance awareness focuses particularly on consumers who have yet to start planning. Long-term care includes a wide range of medical and support services for people with a degenerative condition (such as Parkinson’s, or those that occur after a stroke), a prolonged disease (like cancer), or a cognitive disorder (Alzheimer’s). This type of care is chronic (full-time) and thus can become very expensive. It can be provided in many settings, including nursing homes, your own home, and assisted living facilities.

Planning for old age, and the health problems that come along with it, is best to do now, before it is too late. It is so important to get ready for a better future, protect your retirement savings and your independence, and spare your loved ones from having to assume the responsibilities of paying for your care.

Here are some important facts about long-term care insurance and how you can save:

·         You must health-qualify for long-term care insurance. Not everyone can. Because health changes, especially as you grow older, it’s smart to look into this well before you reach retirement age. Health qualifications can also vary from insurer to insurer. If you’re in great health, don’t use tobacco products, and do not take any medications, every insurer will accept you. Each insurer sets their own qualifications, and those can vary over time. So, be prepared to share your information with an insurance professional – you want them to be able to match you with the best protection for the best price.

·         You’re only going to buy Long-Term Care Insurance once, so make sure you find good coverage. Costs are based on your age at application, so it is best to buy LTC insurance as soon as possible. Your health today can save you 10% to 20% each year. Individuals with few or no current health conditions pay less for their insurance, and this good health (often referred to as preferred health) discount is locked in. That means that you won’t lose your savings when your health changes!

·         Discounts are also offered to married couples and even unmarried adults who are living together.

·         Long-term care can also be necessary for young people, as a result of an accident or an illness that tends to afflict younger people (such as Multiple Sclerosis).

·         If you haven’t heard of LTC insurance, that’s probably because it is relatively new. People are living longer into their lives, so long-term care and LTC insurance have become more widespread and necessary.

Combined Benefits United is a qualified broker that can assist with your future care plans.  We can compare prices among insurance carriers to get you the best coverage and to ensure that your future plans are solidified.
